Urban Trees and Municipal Value: Communicating What a Park System is Worth to a City

A critical component of the urban forest consists of city parkland. Studies by the Trust for Public Land and others have documented the importance of urban and community park systems and identified key aspects of excellence. Yet many cities, unaware of the economic benefit of forests and parks, regularly underfund their parks' maintenance.

Thus, TPL is now moving into the economic realm and quantifying how a quality system contributes to community value . We are developing and testing an expert model and will share our specific economic findings widely with professionals associated with urban and community forestry. On the recommendation of the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council, the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program awarded a $138,800 grant to the $463,560 project.
