The Return of American Elms to America's Main Street: A National Teachable Moment for the Value of Urban Trees
This national media and information campaign will ensure that the planting of 85 disease-resistant American elms in front of the White House in 2005 becomes a A teachable moment @ for urban forestry. The decimation of this deeply loved and versatile urban tree profoundly affected America.
Its return could trigger a popular awakening for urban re-greening if we seize the opportunity. Science-based information will be combined with compelling personal stories, especially by minority and underserved populations, to reach new audiences. The products will include a national press conference, broadcast quality video, internet strategies, a website, and a documentary for urban television systems. On the recommendation of the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council, the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program awarded an $86,000 grant to the $180,500 project.
